BUERGENSTOCK, Switzerland, June 21 — U.S. and Iranian negotiators started talks Sunday at Buergenstock mountain resort in central Switzerland on implementing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by the two sides to reach a final deal.

The talks mark the first round between the two sides after the signing of the MoU aimed at ending conflict on all fronts, including Lebanon. U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who leads the U.S. negotiating team, said before the talks that the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and the ending of the Iranian nuclear program have already been accomplished.

“The question before us now is, how much more can we accomplish together? Can we turn over a new leaf? Can we change relations in the Middle East permanently? Or do we go back to doing things the old way, which is not our preference,” Vance said.

The U.S. negotiating team also includes U.S. presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

The Iranian delegation includes Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, as well as senior security, central bank and oil officials, according Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency.

Pakistani and Qatari mediators are participating in the talks. The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi is also at the site, as he said on social platform X that he met with Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis there to discuss “recent developments regarding Iran” and other issues.

“At this critical moment, it’s important to give diplomacy every opportunity to succeed,” Grossi said. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)

TEHRAN, June 21– Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Sunday the country is determined to pursue the U.S. implementation of its commitments under a recently signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) during the upcoming meeting in Switzerland.

In a post on social media platform X, Baghaei said that the scheduled meeting between Iran and the United States later in the day is aimed at following up on the MoU’s implementation.

He stressed that according to the MoU, the initiation of negotiations between Iran and the United States on a final agreement is conditional upon ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, lifting U.S. naval blockade, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. issuance of waivers for Iran’s exports of crude oil, petroleum products and derivatives, and releasing Iranian frozen assets.

Without implementing those provisions, especially the one related to ending the war on all fronts, it will not be possible to enter talks on the final agreement, the spokesman stressed.

His remarks come as Iran’s negotiating team, including Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, and Deputy Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Bagheri Kani, is currently in Zurich, Switzerland, for talks with the U.S. delegation.

Iran, the United States and Pakistan last week announced the finalization of the MoU on ending the war in the region on all fronts, including Lebanon. On Feb. 28, Israel and the United States launched joint attacks on Tehran and other Iranian cities.

Iran responded with waves of missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and U.S. bases and assets in the region, and tightened its grip on the Strait of Hormuz, barring safe passage of vessels belonging to or affiliated with Israel and the United States. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)

CAPE TOWN, June 21– South Africa’s Parliament Speaker Thokozile Didiza will not oppose President Cyril…

CAPE TOWN, June 21– South Africa’s Parliament Speaker Thokozile Didiza will not oppose President Cyril Ramaphosa’s urgent bid to halt the impeachment proceedings, the Parliament said Sunday.

Ramaphosa filed an urgent application on June 12, seeking to suspend the Impeachment Committee’s work while challenging the findings of an independent panel report into the Phala Phala affair. In court papers, he argued that the proceedings should be paused pending a judicial review of the report.

On May 26, the president launched a separate challenge asking the Western Cape High Court to review and set aside the panel’s findings.

Didiza filed a notice on Friday, saying that she would abide by the Western Cape High Court’s decision. The move means that the Parliament will not contest the application.

In a statement on Sunday, the Parliament said Didiza’s notice to abide will be filed alongside an explanatory affidavit to assist the court.

“Given the content of the explanatory affidavit, the Speaker believes that the stance adopted is not only necessary but is entirely consistent with the respective roles and responsibilities of the Assembly versus those of the Impeachment Committee,” the Parliament said.

The development came days after the Impeachment Committee said it would oppose Ramaphosa’s urgent court application and had asked Didiza to join the committee in opposing the president’s bid.

The impeachment process was revived after South Africa’s Constitutional Court ruled last month that the Parliament had acted unlawfully when it rejected the panel’s report in 2022.

The Phala Phala case stems from the alleged theft of about 580,000 U.S. dollars in cash from Ramaphosa’s private game farm in Limpopo Province in 2020.

An independent panel chaired by former Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo found in a 2022 report that there was prima facie evidence suggesting that Ramaphosa may have committed serious misconduct in connection with the matter. However, the National Assembly later voted against adopting the report and pursuing impeachment proceedings. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)

MOSCOW, June 21– Ukraine conducted multiple drone attacks on Russia overnight on Sunday, killing at least five people and injuring dozens, said regional officials and the Russian Defence Ministry. Four people were killed and 28 others wounded in a drone strike on the Kerch Peninsula in Crimea, according to the Crimean governor.

A Russian Health Ministry aide said 14 of the injured remained in hospital, including two children in critical condition. Elsewhere, in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai to the east of Crimea, authorities said Ukrainian drones struck a Russian ferry at the Kerch ferry crossing area in the Temryuk district, killing one person and injuring another.

Additionally, an oil terminal in the Temryuk district was under a Ukrainian drone attack. “A drone attack caused a fire at an oil terminal in the village of Chushka.

Fire and rescue units have arrived,” the local task force said, adding that drone debris fell on private homes in two other municipalities in the region, with no recorded injuries.

In the southwestern Crimean city of Sevastopol, authorities said a Ukrainian drone carrying explosives fell on the roof of an apartment building in the city center after being jammed by electronic warfare systems.

The building was evacuated as a precaution, and bomb disposal experts removed explosives from the wreckage. No injuries were reported. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, its air defense systems shot down 239 Ukrainian drones overnight. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)

Staff Reporter

THE National Youth Council (NYC) General Assembly in Swakopmund has been postponed after violent disruptions left nine delegates injured, prompted the resignation of the Electoral Committee, and raised concerns over the credibility of the election process.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture said proceedings at the assembly, which has been underway in the Erongo Region since 19 June, were disrupted on Saturday by what it described as “unacceptable, unruly conduct and violence”.

According to the ministry, nine young Namibians sustained injuries during the incident and received medical treatment. All have since been discharged from hospital.

Minister Sanet Steenkamp and Deputy Minister Dino Ballotti visited four of the injured delegates in hospital following the unrest.

The ministry strongly condemned the violence, saying no grievance justified causing harm to others and confirming that the matter is now being reviewed by the relevant authorities.

In response to the disturbances, Steenkamp decided to postpone the continuation of the General Assembly in the interest of safety and order.

The ministry said members of the Electoral Committee and the NYC Interim Board, who witnessed the events firsthand, were significantly affected by the incident. As a result, the Electoral Committee resigned with immediate effect on Sunday, citing safety concerns.

The ministry also acknowledged the conduct of the majority of delegates and affiliates, noting that they remained peaceful and exercised restraint throughout the proceedings.

In addition to the security concerns, the ministry confirmed that it had received a petition from several affiliates and regional youth forums raising issues related to compliance, delegate verification and adherence to the approved roadmap for the assembly.

According to the ministry, these concerns remain unresolved and must be addressed before the General Assembly can resume.

“The legitimacy of the General Assembly depends on a lawful, transparent and credible process,” the statement said.

The ministry added that the NYC Interim Board and other relevant structures would urgently attend to the outstanding matters and communicate the way forward, including timelines for the resumption of the assembly.

The General Assembly was expected to elect a new executive chairperson and board to lead the youth body for the next four years.

NAMWATER has started controlled water releases from the Naute Dam after heavy rainfall in the Hardap and //Karas regions caused inflows to push the dam’s level above full capacity.

The water utility said the dam had reached 116.9% capacity following significant inflows recorded over the past few days.

The controlled releases are being carried out to maintain safe operating levels and manage the increased water volume.

NamWater advised communities and stakeholders located downstream of the dam to exercise caution and take precautionary measures due to the expected increase in water flow.

TEHRAN, June 21– Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Sunday that the recently signed peace memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United States largely serves the interests of the Iranian people, according to the official news agency IRNA.

Speaking at a national conference on monetary and banking policies in the Iranian capital Tehran, Pezeshkian said that the U.S. positions toward Iran had undergone a significant change, with Washington now accepting that it cannot turn a blind eye to the Iranian people’s rights.

He added that upcoming negotiations between Iran and the United States had laid favorable groundwork for economic recovery, market reopening, and problem resolution. Pezeshkian pointed to tangible economic indicators, noting that Iran exported more than 16 million barrels of oil in recent days.

He also expressed hope that with the initiation of negotiations, 6 billion U.S. dollars of Iranian frozen assets in Qatar would be released, adding that the central bank governor was attending the talks specifically for that purpose.

The president accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of opposing regional peace and seeking to “prolong the war, block Iran’s access to its resources and power.”

On nuclear issues, he reiterated that Tehran does not seek to develop nuclear weapons, a position consistent with the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s longstanding view, and affirmed willingness to declare that in writing if necessary.

Yet Pezeshkian insisted that Iran would never relinquish its right to enrich uranium, adding that while past negotiators sought to strip Iran of its missiles, they have now accepted that right due to the strength of the Iranian armed forces and people’s resolve.

He also warned of “enemy plots” to harm national unity and solidarity. Pezeshkian’s remarks come as Iran’s negotiating team, including Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, and Deputy Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Bagheri Kani, is currently in Zurich, Switzerland, for talks with the U.S. delegation.

Iran, the United States, and Pakistan last week announced the finalization of the MoU on ending the war in the region on all fronts, including Lebanon.

On Feb. 28, Israel and the United States launched joint attacks on Tehran and other Iranian cities. Iran responded with waves of missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and U.S. bases and assets in the region, and tightened its grip on the Strait of Hormuz, barring passage of vessels belonging to or affiliated with Israel and the United States.
LOS ANGELES, June 21– Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei said Saturday that he had been told his team would have greater travel flexibility ahead of its final Group G match at the FIFA World Cup.

Iran faces Belgium in its second group match on Sunday before taking on Egypt in Seattle next Friday. Iran opened its campaign with a 2-2 draw against New Zealand on June 15.

The team has been based in Mexico throughout the tournament, and has so far been required to travel to the United States one day before each match before returning to Mexico late on matchday.

Speaking at a pre-match news conference, Ghalenoei said organizers had indicated that different arrangements would be possible for the match in Seattle.

“They said in Seattle, you can do what you want, you can act the way you want to, and you can come earlier,” he said. “But my question is, why didn’t they let us come earlier for the first two games as well?” Ghalenoei said the repeated travel had taken a toll on the squad.

“I think, because we have been flying too much, commuting, as a result of this long commute, we’ve been tired,” he said. “That’s going to affect us mentally, especially me as a head coach, because I want to focus on technical stuff.”

Group G remains finely balanced after Belgium drew 1-1 with Egypt in the opening round. All four teams in the group have one point after one match. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)

The Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture has confirmed the indefinite postponement of the National Youth Council general assembly in Swakopmund following an outbreak of violence on Saturday.

The ministry confirmed that nine delegates sustained injuries during the disruption and received medical attention, and all have since been discharged.

Youth minister Sanet Steenkamp and her deputy, Dino Ballotti visited four of the affected individuals in hospital.

The ministry has condemned the violence, stating that no grievance justifies harm and that the matter is now under review by the relevant authorities.

In the interest of safety and order, the ministry says, Steenkamp took the decision to postpone the continuation of the general assembly.

It further announced that the Electoral Committee has since resigned with immediate effect, citing safety concerns, while the ministry has also received a petition from several affiliates and regional youth forums raising concerns regarding compliance, delegate verification, and adherence to the approved roadmap.

Steenkamp maintained that the legitimacy of the general assembly depends on a lawful, transparent, and credible process.

She said the interim board will urgently attend to the outstanding issues and communicate the way forward, including timelines, in due course.

The ministry has thanked all delegates, affiliates, and stakeholders for their patience and commitment to a fair process.

LONDON, June 21– British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has told Prime Minister Keir Starmer to step down, British media reported on Sunday. Cooper, one of Starmer’s most senior ministers, is understood to have delivered the message to Starmer privately over the weekend, according to Sky News.

In addition, British Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander urged Starmer to set a timetable for his departure on Friday, saying it would be in the interests of the country and the Labour Party for him to step aside to allow an orderly transition to a new leader, according to Financial Times, quoting “several government members.”

It has also been reported that British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood previously called on Starmer to set a date for his departure. Speaking to Sky News, Business and Trade Secretary Peter Kyle said he thinks Starmer “is making time to reflect on the political realities, challenges and opportunities that he finds himself in” over the weekend.

The renewed pressure on Starmer to resign came after Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham won a parliamentary by-election in the northwestern English constituency of Makerfield on Friday morning, paving the way for his return to parliament and a possible bid for the Labour Party leadership.

Burnham said during a television debate earlier this month that he would seek to enter any potential Labour leadership contest, should he win the by-election.

Starmer said on Friday that he would run should there be a leadership contest, adding: “I’m not going to walk away from that.” (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)

WASHINGTON, June 21 — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that no tolls would be charged in the Strait of Hormuz during the 60-day interim ceasefire with Iran or after the period expires.

In a social media post, Trump said the United States could impose tolls if a final agreement is not reached.

“There will be NO TOLLS in the Hormuz Strait for 60 days during the Cease Fire Period, and there will be NO TOLLS after the 60 day period has expired, unless they are imposed by and for the United States of America, should the deal not be completed, for services rendered as the Guardian Angel to the countries of the Middle East for purposes of both past, present, and future reimbursement of costs,” Trump wrote.

Iran’s main military command, Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, announced Saturday the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, citing U.S. breach of the newly signed peace memorandum of understanding and Israel’s ceasefire violations in southern Lebanon, Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency reported.
HAVANA, June 21 — Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla said Saturday that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was lying and contradicting U.S. President Donald Trump by denying Washington’s oil blockade against Cuba.

“When the U.S. secretary of state talks about incompetence in Cuba, he should be asked why he lies chronically and contradicts the U.S. president and his spokeswoman by denying the existence of the total fuel blockade that the White House acknowledges,” Rodriguez wrote on X.

Rodriguez said every reference Rubio makes to the situation in Cuba includes “an attempt to avoid any responsibility and present himself as a savior.”

The Cuban minister denounced an “economic suffocation plan” by Rubio and the U.S. administration against Cuba, saying it prevents foreign companies from selling parts and technology for the island’s thermoelectric plants.

The plan “prevents any company in the world from selling oil to our country” and sanctions CUPET, the Cuban company that has the infrastructure and capacity to handle fuel logistics in Cuba, Rodriguez said.

It sanctions nickel companies, threatens foreign companies with business in tourism and mining, strips foreign citizens who visit Cuba of the right to use ESTA visas to enter the U.S., and blackmails and threatens states that sovereignly maintain health cooperation agreements with Cuba, Rodriguez said.

He added that Rubio “openly calls for the subversion of Cuba’s constitutional order and persistently seeks U.S. military intervention in Cuba.”

An executive order signed by Trump on Jan. 29 authorized the White House to impose tariffs on countries exporting fuel to Cuba.

So far in 2026, Cuba has received only one oil shipment: about 100,000 tonnes of crude carried by the Russian vessel Anatoly Kolodkin. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)

NIAMEY, June 21– The Confederation of Sahel States has expressed strong support for Niger following Thursday’s terrorist attack on Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, which killed 11 soldiers and two civilians.

In a statement broadcast by Nigerien television on Saturday, the bloc, which consists of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, praised the Nigerien armed forces for their swift and professional response, saying troops “neutralized” the attackers during the assault.

It said the attack appeared to be aimed at weakening the operational capacity of Niger’s military and reversing recent battlefield losses suffered by armed terrorist groups.

However, it said Nigerien forces quickly repelled the attackers, describing the operation as another defeat for militant groups due to the army’s vigilance, responsiveness and commitment.

The confederation said such repeated and “orchestrated” attacks would not weaken its member states, but instead reinforce unity among Sahel countries around their leaders’ shared goals of protecting territorial integrity, safeguarding civilians and restoring lasting peace in the region.

An armed group linked to al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for Thursday’s attack, during which 22 armed attackers were also killed. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)

BEIJING/TEHRAN, June 21– Senior U.S. and Iranian delegations are gathering for talks in Switzerland on Sunday for what could prove to be a decisive phase in transforming the U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding (MoU) into a broader political settlement.

Analysts say the talks may serve as an early test of whether both sides are willing to move beyond a ceasefire framework toward more substantive political and security arrangements.

WHO WILL ATTEND

Delegations from Iran and the United States were initially scheduled to meet in Switzerland on Friday, but the meeting was canceled and rescheduled for Sunday.

Despite the postponement, delegations from both countries have arrived in Buergenstock, Switzerland for initial negotiations on implementing the MoU signed earlier this week to end their nearly four-month war.

Iran’s negotiating team, headed by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, arrived in Switzerland Saturday night for talks with the U.S. delegation, state-run IRIB news agency said Sunday.

The delegation also comprises Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, Deputy Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Bagheri Kani, Governor of the Central Bank of Iran Abdolnaser Hemmati, and some deputy ministers, the IRIB said.

Observers say the composition of the Iranian delegation underscored that sanctions relief and economic recovery remain central to Tehran’s calculations.

“We welcome the arrival of the Iranian delegation in Switzerland,” the Swiss Foreign Ministry said on X.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance departed Washington for Switzerland on Saturday for talks with Iran. He joined U.S. presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, who had already arrived in Switzerland for talks with Iran.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also arrived in Switzerland to participate in technical-level talks as a follow-up to the recently signed U.S.-Iran MoU.

Yet events unfolding alongside the diplomatic effort underscore how precarious the process remains.

DIVERGING GOALS

On the Iranian side, Baghaei said the trip is in fact aimed at demanding the fulfillment of U.S. commitments under the MoU.

In an interview with the state-run IRIB TV, Baghaei said negotiations on a final agreement start when the United States begins and continues implementing the MoU’s provisions, which is not the case at present.

Baghaei emphasized that the Iranian delegation intends to seek clarification from the other side on how it plans to fulfill its commitments under the MoU.

He said Iran has been committed to its obligations under the agreement, adding the United States had undertaken to make Israel stop its attacks against Lebanon, “but we are witnessing that the other side has not fulfilled its duties, and this is considered a clear violation of the ceasefire MoU.”

On the U.S. side, Vance framed the talks around two immediate priorities: Iran’s nuclear program and stabilizing Lebanon.

“I think we’re going to hopefully make progress on the nuclear issue, make progress on the Lebanon ceasefire issue,” Vance told reporters before his departure. “Those are the two big things that I think we’re to be focused on.”

According to Israel’s Channel 12, the initial U.S. goal in the Switzerland talks is to secure an agreement from Iran to allow International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors to inspect its nuclear sites for the first time since the 12-day war in June 2025.

In return for Iran’s consent to allow inspectors back into the sites, the United States is willing to unfreeze several billion dollars in Iranian assets held in Qatar, the report said, with those funds to be used by the Iranian government on purchasing food, medicines and other humanitarian necessities.

STICKING POINTS REMAIN

The U.S.-Iran MoU means that “both parties have concluded that continued confrontation is too costly and that a transition toward testing political intentions is necessary,” said Khaled Al-Hroub, a professor of political science and international conflicts at Northwestern University in Qatar.

Despite the concessions, analysts note that the agreement neither addresses the entrenched differences between the United States and Iran nor lays out a clear path for resolving them.

As the delegations are in Switzerland for talks, competing narratives over the Strait of Hormuz and reports of continued Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon further clouded the already fragile outlook for the negotiations.

Iran’s main military command, Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, announced Saturday the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, citing a U.S. breach of the newly-signed peace MoU and Israeli ceasefire violations in southern Lebanon, Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency reported.

The Islamic Revolution Guard Corps Navy warned all vessels against approaching the Strait of Hormuz, saying their security could be endangered if they ignored the warning.

However, U.S. Central Command said that the Strait of Hormuz remained open, with increasing commercial ship traffic through the waterway.

“Safe passage through the international waterway remained intact today as 55 merchant ships transited, moving large amounts of cargo and more than 17 million barrels of oil to global markets,” the command said in a statement.

“U.S. forces remain present and vigilant to ensure all aspects of the agreement with Iran are adhered to, obeyed, and in full force and effect,” the statement said.

Vance told Fox News on Saturday that the United States is “not seeing any evidence that the Iranians are still closing down the Strait of Hormuz.”

Trump, in a social media post on Saturday, said that no tolls would be charged in the Strait of Hormuz during the 60-day interim ceasefire with Iran or after the period expires.

However, Trump left open the possibility of a Hormuz toll levied by the United States “for services rendered as the Guardian Angel to the countries of the Middle East” if a peace deal is not completed.

Mohammad Mokhber, an adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, said that as long as the agreement remains just on paper, the flow of Middle East energy would remain halted, according to his post on X.

Furthermore, analysts point to Israel as a major wild card. An emergency session on Lebanon has been added to the talks in Switzerland and will be the first topic addressed, a diplomat briefed on the session told CNN on Sunday.

Israel is not a direct party to the MoU, but its strategic calculations will influence the prospect for a final agreement, said Abdul Majid Suwailim, a Ramallah-based political analyst.

At least 16 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon on Saturday, said the Lebanese Civil Defense, hours after a ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel took effect.

Moreover, the cumulative death toll from Israeli attacks on Lebanon since March 2 has risen to 4,057, with 12,121 people wounded, the Lebanese Health Ministry’s Public Health Emergency Operations Center said.

An Israeli military official told media that Hezbollah fired more than 50 projectiles at Israeli forces in southern Lebanon overnight. In response, Israeli forces struck what the official described as “Hezbollah targets.”

“The sticking point is Lebanon, the sticking point is Israel,” said Victor J. Willi, executive director of the Middle East Institute Switzerland.

Tehran is now effectively testing whether Washington is willing — and able — to restrain Israeli military operations enough to preserve the wider peace framework, Willi told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, a U.S. government-funded media organization. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)

MINISTER Sanet Steenkamp suspended proceedings at the National Youth Council (NYC) General Assembly in Swakopmund on Saturday night after tensions over delegate accreditation and the timing of elections escalated into disorder, forcing the postponement of the leadership vote.

The assembly, which is expected to elect a new executive chairperson and board for the next four years, was disrupted after delegates became divided over whether elections should proceed on Saturday as planned or be postponed to Sunday.

According to reports from the venue, the situation deteriorated after the NYC interim board announced that elections would continue following consultations with delegates and ministry officials. A majority of delegates reportedly supported proceeding with the vote.

However, another group objected, citing alleged irregularities in the accreditation and selection of delegates eligible to vote. The dispute sparked unrest inside the Swakopmund Multipurpose Centre, with claims that officials from the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) were removed from their designated seating area and proceedings brought to a halt.

There were also unverified reports of teargas being discharged inside the venue, delegates fainting and one person being detained. These claims had not been independently confirmed by Sunday.

Ministry spokesperson Simon Shino confirmed that tensions arose among delegates but said he could not verify reports of physical altercations or the use of teargas.

He added that police were present to restore order and that proceedings were suspended late on Saturday night.

Steenkamp subsequently instructed that the assembly reconvene on Sunday while consultations continued on the way forward.

The leadership race is understood to be primarily between former Namibia National Students Organisation presidents Ester Simon and Simon Taapopi, while several other candidates are contesting seats on the board.

The disruption comes a day after Vice President Lucia Witbooi officially opened the assembly and urged delegates to respect democratic processes and accept the outcome of the elections.

Delegates remained in Swakopmund on Sunday awaiting a decision on whether voting would proceed, be postponed, or whether the General Assembly would be declared invalid.

THE Namibian National Squash Team has received valuable preparation support ahead of the 2026 Growthpoint Jarvis/Kaplan Tournament through a training programme developed by South African squash coach and player Ruan Olivier.

Olivier, co-founder and Head Coach of Nu Ag Academy, recently visited Namibia to work with the national squad as part of the “Road to Jarvis” programme, which he designed earlier this year to guide the team’s preparations for the tournament.

The programme, introduced in February, has been followed by the national players over several months, with Olivier’s latest visit allowing him to assess their progress, refine key areas of their game and provide final guidance ahead of the competition.

A former South African national team representative, Growthpoint SA Nationals finalist and professional PSA player, Olivier brings extensive experience both as a competitor and coach. Through Nu Ag Academy, he focuses on developing emerging squash talent.

The Namibian Squash Association expressed appreciation to Olivier for his commitment, expertise and contribution towards strengthening the national team’s preparations.

The players benefited from his technical knowledge, professionalism and passion for the sport, while team captain Le-Hugo van Rooyen also worked closely with Olivier during the visit, gaining valuable insights and leadership guidance as the squad enters the final phase of preparation.

The association said partnerships such as these play an important role in developing squash in the region and inspiring athletes to reach higher levels.

The political landscape of Namibia has undergone significant changes in recent years, with the ruling SWAPO party continuing to dominate the scene. Founded in 1960 as a liberation movement, SWAPO has been in power since the country gained independence from South Africa in 1990. The party's leader at the time, Sam Nujoma, was elected president, marking the beginning of SWAPO's rule in Namibia. Over the years, the party has maintained its grip on power, thanks in part to its role in the liberation struggle.

.
Despite its dominance, SWAPO has faced increasing competition from opposition parties in recent years. In the 2019 parliamentary elections, opposition parties made significant gains, increasing their presence in the National Assembly for the legislative term from 2020 to 2025. This shift was further evident in the regional and local authorities elections in late 2020, where opposition parties continued to make inroads. However, SWAPO remains the dominant force in Namibian politics, with a strong legacy as a liberation movement and a continued commitment to the country's development.

.
In recent celebrations, SWAPO marked its 66th anniversary, commemorating its founding on April 19, 1960. The occasion also featured the inauguration of the party's new headquarters, a significant milestone for the organization. The event was seen as an opportunity for the party to reflect on its history and its role in shaping Namibia's future. With its rich history and continued influence, SWAPO remains a major player in Namibian politics, with a strong commitment to the country's development and stability.

.
As Namibia navigates its political crossroads, the role of SWAPO will be crucial in shaping the country's future. With its dominance of the political landscape, the party has a significant impact on the country's governance and development. However, the increasing presence of opposition parties and the shifting political landscape will likely continue to challenge SWAPO's grip on power. As the country moves forward, it will be important for SWAPO and other political parties to work together to ensure stability, democracy, and development for all Namibians.

.
In conclusion, the SWAPO party remains a dominant force in Namibian politics, with a rich history and a continued commitment to the country's development. As the party looks to the future, it will be important for it to navigate the changing political landscape and work with other parties to ensure stability and progress for Namibia. With its strong legacy and continued influence, SWAPO is likely to remain a major player in Namibian politics for years to come.

The Namibian economy is poised for growth in 2026, driven primarily by the oil, gas, and mining sectors. According to recent projections, the country's mining industry is expected to play a significant role in underpinning economic growth, as the economy recovers from a weaker performance in 2025. The increasing global demand for critical and strategic minerals, particularly uranium, is anticipated to boost Namibia's mining sector.

.
The mining industry in Namibia provides employment opportunities and attracts foreign direct investment, which is crucial for economic growth. The sector's contribution to the country's economy is expected to be substantial, with the 2026/27 National Budget projecting real gross domestic product to grow by 3.1% in 2026. The growth outlook is largely driven by the mining sector, particularly uranium and gold. The Chamber of Mines of Namibia, a member-based organization, has scheduled the 2026 Mining Expo And Conference to take place from 4 - 6 August at the Windhoek Show Grounds, further highlighting the sector's importance.

.
Namibia's strategic location and abundant natural resources make it an attractive destination for foreign investors. The country's mining sector has the potential to drive economic growth and development, and the government is expected to implement policies that support the sector's growth. The increasing demand for uranium and other critical minerals is expected to create new opportunities for investment and job creation in the sector. As the country looks to diversify its economy, the mining sector is likely to remain a key driver of growth and development.

.
The fluctuating commodity prices, however, pose a challenge to the sector's growth. The mining industry is subject to global market trends, and changes in commodity prices can impact the sector's performance. Nevertheless, the long-term outlook for the sector remains positive, driven by the increasing demand for critical and strategic minerals. The Chamber of Mines of Namibia is working to promote the sector's growth and development, and the government is expected to provide support to the industry through policies and regulations that encourage investment and job creation.

.
In conclusion, Namibia's mining sector is expected to play a significant role in driving economic growth in 2026. The increasing global demand for critical and strategic minerals, particularly uranium, is anticipated to boost the sector's growth, and the government is expected to implement policies that support the sector's development. As the country looks to diversify its economy, the mining sector is likely to remain a key driver of growth and development.

The Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme is at the forefront of this effort, aiming to capitalize on the country's abundant solar and wind resources to become a global leader in green hydrogen production. With projections indicating that Namibia could achieve some of the world's lowest production costs by 2030, the government is keen to attract significant investment to the sector.

.
The Hyphen Green Hydrogen Project, a multi-billion-dollar initiative, is a flagship project in this regard, with the government signaling its total commitment to the venture. A final investment decision on the project is expected by the end of 2026, and if successful, it could pave the way for Namibia to become a major player in the global green hydrogen market. The project's potential impact on the environment and local ecosystems is, however, a concern, with some warning that it could have devastating effects on local wildlife, such as penguins. As such, the government and project developers will need to carefully balance the economic benefits of the project with the need to protect the environment and ensure sustainable development.

.
The Namibia Industrial Decarbonisation Workshop, convened in Windhoek in March 2026, brought together stakeholders to discuss the country's decarbonization efforts and the role of green hydrogen in this process. The workshop highlighted the need for a coordinated approach to developing the sector, with government, industry, and civil society working together to create a supportive policy framework and attract investment. The Government of the Republic of Namibia has also launched initiatives to study the potential of green hydrogen, agriculture, and energy sectors, with a view to identifying opportunities for growth and development.

.
Namibia's investment pipeline is significant, with N$161 billion worth of investments in the pipeline as of March 2023, and N$2.8 billion worth of projects currently in operation. The green hydrogen sector is expected to be a major driver of this investment, with the potential to create new jobs, stimulate economic growth, and contribute to the country's sustainable development goals. As the country moves forward with its green hydrogen ambitions, it will be important to ensure that the benefits of this investment are shared equitably among all Namibians, and that the environmental and social impacts of the sector are carefully managed.

.
In conclusion, Namibia's green hydrogen sector is poised for significant growth and development in the coming years, driven by the government's commitment to the Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme and the potential of the Hyphen Green Hydrogen Project. With its abundant solar and wind resources, Namibia is well-placed to become a global leader in green hydrogen production, and the country's investment pipeline suggests that there is significant interest in the sector from investors. As the sector continues to evolve, it will be important to balance the economic benefits of green hydrogen with the need to protect the environment and ensure sustainable development.

VICE PRESIDENT Lucia Witbooi has called on churches in Namibia to strengthen their partnership with government in addressing social challenges, including moral decline, corruption, substance abuse and gender-based violence.

Witbooi made the remarks during the Annual General Meeting of the Council of Churches in Namibia (CCN) in Windhoek on Wednesday, where she highlighted the important role of faith-based institutions in promoting unity, social cohesion and national development.

Speaking under the theme “Strengthening Christian Unity, Prophetic Witness and Institutional Renewal”, the Vice President said unity among churches remains essential in strengthening Christian values and enabling faith communities to contribute meaningfully to society.

She said Namibia continues to make progress in consolidating democracy, peace and development, but challenges such as unemployment, inequality, poverty, food insecurity and limited economic opportunities remain.

According to Witbooi, addressing these challenges requires a collective effort involving government, the private sector, civil society and faith-based organisations.

“In this regard, the Council of Churches in Namibia occupies a unique and highly respected place within our society. As a prophetic voice, the Council is called not only to identify societal challenges but also to inspire hope, promote justice, encourage ethical leadership and defend the dignity of every human being,” she said.

Witbooi acknowledged the contribution of churches across the country through education, healthcare, humanitarian assistance, community development initiatives and social welfare programmes.

She encouraged the CCN to remain focused on its mission of providing moral leadership, fostering unity and responding to the needs of communities.

“As I conclude, allow me to emphasise the call to the church and religious institutions to partner with Government to combat moral decay, corruption, substance abuse and gender-based violence in our society, among other evils,” Witbooi said.

She appealed to churches to continue supporting vulnerable groups, including young people, women and children, by promoting good behaviour and strong family values.

“Our young people need help, our women need help, and our little children need help; therefore, let the church assist to bring hope, especially to the most vulnerable members of our society,” she said.

Witbooi further called for continued cooperation between government and churches in pursuit of national unity, social cohesion and inclusive development.
